South Loop Fine & Performing Arts

In addition to the fine & performing arts curriculum woven into our regular school day and extended day programs, South Loop Elementary School offers many opportunities for your child to explore his or her creative side. Activities are available in several different areas: Music, Dance, Drama, and Media & Visual Arts.

Music

South Loop Band

The South Loop Band is part of the regular school day and available to all students in grades 4th - 8th. The school band will participate in city-wide competitions. Instruments are provided subject to availability, and parents can rent instruments if necessary. There is a mandatory $50 band fee for students who use a school instrument, and a mandatory $25 band fee for students who rent an instrument. Chicago Children's Choir
Free Grades 3rd - 8th Enrollment: September

Through a partnership with the Chicago Children's Choir, South Loop Elementary School has an in-school program that provides our school with a qualified conductor to establish a choir of 20-50 students. Students receive classroom training in basic music theory and choral performance from professional music educators. By developing musical skills and performing in public (citywide performances with other members of CCC), the children acquire poise, increased self-esteem and an understanding that discipline and hard work bring rewards. "Jazz Alive" Jazz Band

Through a partnership with the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic, South Loop Elementary School has an after-school program which provides participating students with an understanding of the fundamentals of jazz music and an opportunity to participate in a jazz band.

Little Kids Rock
Free Grades 3rd - 8th Enrollment: September pdfRegistration Form 

This program offers free guitar lessons and drum lessons to interested students. Students will learn improvisation & composition, and play rock/pop songs (both old & new), with opportunities to play in front of live audiences. Guitars provided (limited supply) and there is a drum set on-site at the school. Minimal sight reading required. Limited space available with priority given to returning students, so sign up early. Violin Lessons
Fee Based Grades K - 8th Enrollment: Ongoing

Through our school partnership with the Sherwood Conservatory of Music, we offer in-school fee-based violin lessons during the Extended Day Program. Lessons will be offered to beginning students on Mondays (October 3rd - May 25th). Lessons for returning or advanced students will be held on Fridays (October 7th - May 25th). Is your child planning to be the next "American IDOL"? Help him/her get a start with private vocal lessons. Our general music teacher, Ms. Anders is offering fee-based 30-minute private voice lessons afterschool Monday through Thursday. Spaces are limited and will fill quickly, so enroll early. Hip-Hop Dance Classes

South Loop students love Hip Hop music, so why not teach them all the right moves to go along with it and allow them to express themselves in a positive, creative and healthy way! Irish Dance Classes

Have you ever been to a Chicago St. Patrick's Day parade and seen the energetic young dancers with bouncing curls doing Irish dance? Through a partnership with McNulty Irish Dancers, South Loop Elementary School hosts Irish Dance Lessons for learners of all ages. Our 12-week fall session starts September 6th, and will be held on Tuesday evenings at school.

Lookingglass Theater Program

Our Extended Day Program provides many free opportunities for your child to participate in drama activities. However, if your little diva requires more, then this program made available through a partnership with Lookingglass Theater is for you. This 13 week session will provide an opportunity for students to produce their own informal show. Students will learn to work collaboratively, develop drama skills, play theater games and much more. Hyde Park Arts Class

Sign your K-2 student up for art classes taught by an artist from the Hyde Park Arts Center! AnetaArt Classes

Through a partnership with AnetaArt Classes, South Loop students can participate in one or more art classes that are well suited to a child's development of fine motor skills. These fun, eco-friendly classes allow students to experiment with traditional and non-traditional mediums to express their inner-self.

Fashion Design

Students leap into the area of fashion design and complete their own fancy original garment: a dress (Fall) and blouses (Spring). Students start with patternmaking, fitting, sewing (teacher sews all clothes), painting and decorating. Class will finish with a Fashion Show.

Interior and Exterior Design

Students will build a 3D interior scale model "Teenagers Room." They will learn how to manipulate and plan the space, to work with scale and measurements, to pay attention to color and detail, and to use different mediums and materials. Class finishes with "Show and Tell".
