What is a Local School Council?
Local School Councils are the site-based management team of each school. Their primary responsibility is to select the school's principal, renew the principals
contract, approve the School Improvement Plan for Advancing Academic Achievement and approving the school's budget for the school year.
Local School Councils were created under the 1988 School Reform Act to involve Chicago's communities in their schools. Councils are at the very heart of school
reform, and the key factors to many positive changes taking place. Input and decision-making by the Local School Councils have proven to be meaningful and the councils have become
positive partners in the education process.
We encourage every person committed and dedicated to the education of children to become involved in the LSC election, become a candidate, run for office, be
seated, and make a difference! Play a role in future of Chicago Public Schools. The time is now. For more information please contact the Murphy School office or CPS Department of
School and Community Relations.
