Some Future Authors to Look Out For!

June 12th, 2010 by Lindsay at 9:45 am

"One of the best parts of my internship at Open Books is being able to see young kids express themselves through their writing. Each child has such an imagination, such talent! Here are two of the many great stories that have been created during one of our field trips. Though this writer may be young, he or she is well on their way to becoming an author some day!"

It was only me and my best friend sitting on the dock of the pier on that cool summer day under the glowing sun. "I wonder how many clouds are in the sky today," Casey said as he tilted his head back and let a piece of perfect sky surround him and embrace him. I looked up, too. I didn't know, but I started counting anyway because that's what kids like to do: count things. But I realized I would not be able to get an accurate count for there were some clouds that were connected to others and some that I could not see. Some clouds were puffy and soft like giant marshmallows in the sky. Others stretched themselves so thin that they were but faded wisps but hovering so close to the earth. Next, I remember seeing things in the clouds. I could see a dragon holding a cup of tea. A bumble bee with a super muscular arm. The strangest Santa Clause in a tutu. All the clouds in the sky told a story on that summer day.

Casey had been my best friend since before we could walk or talk. He wasn't the kind of friend who I told all my deepest darkest secrets to because he was a friend who already knew them. I didn't have to tell him not to share my crazy and weird adventures because he was part of every single one of them. We had been everywhere together and we planned on going to the same high school and college. I really miss him. That same day, he had gotten into a car accident and died.

"What a great story! This next story is so cute. Remardo has such a great imagination- I had to share his story with you!"

My Awesome Day
Remardo W.

One day when I was at home I was bored with nothing to do. It was a really hot day and everybody was outside getting wet. I didn't feel like being bothered so I just went downstairs and played my Xbox360. My Xbox360 is in my basement and that's where I spend most of my life. But after a while I got tired of playing the game, so I went back up stairs.

When I got to my room I walked in my closet and went to Narnia. When I got there I went to Mrs. Thomas's house to play with Erkle and Lufasa. Erkle and Lufasa are like family. They make me feel like I'm at home and I can be myself around them. When I got to their house, they decided that they wanted to go swimming.

So we're on our way and we ran into this big grumpy troll and his brother, the three-headed dog beast. They both like to bully people. So we decided to teach them a lesson. We picked up sticks and stones and started chasing them. We chased them all the way back to their house. They ran inside the house and came back out with their oldest brother. Their oldest brother is mixed, he?s a German Shepherd mixed with a human, lion, troll, and a gorilla. We never see his brother but that's just what we heard. So when we hear him coming we run and dodge every tree that appeared in front of us.

We get back into the house and we were scared and didn't know what to do. Their dad was asleep and he was one huge, buff wildebeest. Everyone feared Mr. Thomas, but I guess their brother wasn?t thinking at the time. Their brother kept a steady beat on the door. We heard Mr. Thomas getting out. We all looked at each other and ran.

Mr. Thomas opened the door and got a good grip on their brother's neck. They saw Mr. Thomas but their brother couldn't. He was in the grip of Mr. Thomas. Mr. Thomas tightened his grip and tossed their brother all the way to lake Narnia and we were never bothered again.
