Cultural Exploration

Cultural Exploration

At South Loop Elementary School, we believe in celebrating our diversity by learning about other cultures. The following activities provide avenues for learning:

South Loop Around the World
Free Grades Pre-K - 8th Enrollment: N/A

South Loop Around the World is an evening event where our families come together to celebrate and learn about our diverse cultures. Families are invited to create a display about their culture with foods, artifacts, photographs and books.  Our celebration culminates with several live performances, including music and dance.  It is a special evening that all of our families enjoy, whether presenting about their own culture or learning about others. This school year's event will be held in Spring 2012.

Cultural Awareness Classroom Activities
Free Grades Pre-K - 8th Enrollment: N/A

One day each month is designated as a Culture Awareness Day! Teachers plan classroom activities to learn about the month's designated cultural group. Details about what is happening in your child's classroom can be found on your teacher's classroom website.

Lango Spanish Language Learning
Fee Based Grades K - 4th, plus non-attending students  Enrollment: Ongoing

Students in grades 2nd through 4th have the option to take after school Spanish immersion classes through a partnership with Lango Chicago. Students will learn Spanish through adventures and activities that require increased levels of engagement and understanding over time, and that reward kids with a feeling of accomplishment. A simple literacy component ensures that these students not only listen, speak, sing and play in their new language, but start to read and write as well. The curriculum is structured to meet the child's need to move around after school. Registration includes a CD, memory card game, website access, and sticker workbook for at home reinforcement. Classes will be held at the main building from 3:30-4:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays for K - 1st, and 4:30-5:30pm Tuesdays and Thursdays for 2nd - 4th grades. Class size is limited to 12 students. Registration is first come, first served.

Lango Pasaporte! Spanish & Music
Fee Based Grades 5th - 8th  Enrollment: Ongoing

Grab your passports and join us for a tour around the Spanish speaking world.  Each week we will randomly draw a country from a bag and plan a trip to that country.  We will talk about where it is located, what makes it special and then learn the words to a song from that country! This class is a great way for kids to learn more about all of the Spanish speaking countries around the world and practice their Spanish. At the end of our 6 week session we hope they will come away with a new knowledge of popular Spanish music and culture, and hopefully a new favorite song or music group!

Check back soon for updated session dates.
