Ms. Shelton Honored for a Second Year in a Row

On August 22nd, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Public Schools CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett recognized 130 Chicago Public School principals from across the district as recipients of the second annual principal performance award for leading their schools to significant growth in at least two of four performance categories: reading, math, closing the achievement gap, and individual students achieving growth targets. For the second consecutive year, our principal, Ms. Tara Shelton, was among the award recipients. In fact, she was once again among a smaller subset of principals (75) whose schools met three of the four award criteria. The award is intended to reward principals for building school environments that drive student success.

Specifically, her qualification is based upon the fact that South Loop met the following criteria:

  • Students Met or Exceeded the 90th percentile nationally on NWEA Reading Growth;
  • Students Met or Exceeded the 90th percentile nationally on NWEA Math Growth;
  • South Loop School Narrowed the Achievement Gap by bringing targeted groups at to the 70th national performance percentile.
